In a notable development ahead of next year's general election, two prominent figures in Nepali politics have joined forces. This coalition comes in the aftermath of widespread and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the removal of the sitting government.

A Pledge to Address Young People's Concerns

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially vowed to focus on the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This promise comes after the turbulent anti-corruption protests that occurred in September, which resulted in significant casualties.

"Consensus should not be what a leader wants, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The late summer uprising was triggered by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action acted as a spark for underlying discontent stemming from a long period of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted graft in politics.

Details of the New Electoral Partnership

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been defined. Rabi Lamichhane will remain as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's candidate for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

• Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling widespread discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has previously held the posts of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was not long ago released on bail in a case involving reported cooperative fraud and organized crime.
• Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's current political transition. He played a role in setting up the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.

Wider Government Discussions Taking Place

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of leading political figures. These talks involved ex- prime ministers and the presidents of rival major parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the uprising.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that conducting a credible election is a collective responsibility. The message reiterated the government's dedication to ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for the polls, noting that efforts are being made to eliminate any room for doubt.
