The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.

EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.

“For too long, European activists have spearheaded organised efforts to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

The bans were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
